      • April 19, 2022 – For residents of Maine and Massachusetts only, the deadline is April 19, 2022.

For taxpayers in federally (FEMA) declared disaster areas, see FAQs for Disaster Victims.

  • Payment of federal taxes: Federal individual tax is due on the same date as the original tax return, without regard to extensions.
    • IRS accepts full and partial payments, including payments toward a payment plan (including installment agreement). However, penalties and interest will continue to accrue as applicable until you pay the full balance.
    • IRS has a new online Chatbot option that anyone can use to start a conversation, if you need more assistance with arranging to pay. Just click on the ‘start a conversation’ button.
  • Extension of time to file a tax return: Anyone who needs more time to file can get an automatic extension until Oct. 17, 2022. To get the extension, you generally must estimate your tax liability and should also pay any amount due. An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay your tax liability. Penalties and interest will accrue as applicable if you fail to timely pay your tax liability.
  • Individual tax filers, regardless of income, can use Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension.
