Winter Storm and Cold Weather Preparedness: San José continues to experience storms and cold weather. Stay current with timely information, preparedness tips and resources via the City’s social media pages and storm preparedness webpage: bit.ly/SJStormPrep.

PG&E’s Safety Net Compensation Program: Customers who lost power for more than 48 hours during the winter storms can receive a “Storm Inconvenience” payment from PG&E. Payments range from $25-$100 depending on the length of an outage. The Safety Net program pays Storm Inconvenience payments automatically 60 to 120 days after the outage. While payments are automatic, PG&E recommends impacted customers call to confirm their payment. San José Animal Care Center New Hours of Operation: Effective April 1, the San José Animal Care Center (ACS) has new hours of operation. 
 
Lobby and Adoption Hours

  • Monday noon to 4 p.m.
  • Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Surrender hours for found/stray pets, owner surrenders and owner-requested euthanasia will continue daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please visit ACS’s webpage

Kitten Season is Here: It’s raining kittens! It is officially kitten season and ACS is expecting a lot of new arrivals in the upcoming weeks. The ACS Foster Team needs items to support all the incoming kittens. If you are interested in providing gifts and donations, please shop ACS’s Wish List

Clean the Shelters – A Successful Event: The ACS hosted Clean the Shelters week from March 20-25, where local organizations, corporations, and individuals assisted ACS staff with deep cleaning kennels and building enrichment toys to improve the lives of shelter pets. For more information on adopting a pet or donating, visit ACS’ webpage.   

Spring Career Fair: Looking for a job? Attend the April 25 Spring Career Fair at San José City College in the Main Gym from 3 to 5 p.m. More than 60 employers will participate including Farmers Insurance, Olympus, and the County of Santa Clara. Community partners such as San Jose Job Corps, the Employment Development Department and NPower will be present to share additional resources. Free food and parking will be provided. To register and learn more about this event, visit bit.ly/SJCC-career-fair. The career fair is hosted by work2future, Manufacture: San Jose, and San José City College.  

Free Translation and Interpretation Services: Community members can request City documents translated into their preferred language, and, with advance notice, interpretation services can be provided for any City-hosted meeting. Which includes the following:

  • City Council
  • Council Committees
  • Council Appointed Boards and Commissions, and City hosted community meetings

These services are at no cost to community members and requests can be submitted in any language to [email protected] or by calling 3-1-1.

Welcoming Interactive 2023 Volunteer Opportunities: Join us at the annual Welcoming Interactive conference, being held in San José at the Signia by Hilton on April 26-28 in partnership with Welcoming America. Volunteers who complete a four-hour or more shift over the three-day conference will receive access to the full conference. Volunteer as an Art & Library History Tour Docent: Did you know that there are 34 “sculptural insertions” integrated into the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library? Gain experience leading tours while helping new and returning visitors discover these hidden gems throughout all nine floors of the Library. Docents receive comprehensive training on King Library’s history and art collection. In addition to gaining experience as a tour guide, docents help foster lifelong learning by introducing customers to Library services and resources. SJPL Celebrates National Volunteer Week: The San José Public Library (SJPL) will celebrate National Volunteer Week from April 16–22. Last year, SJPL engaged over 1,200 volunteers who contributed over 27,600 hours of service. Library volunteers contribute by sharing their time and special skills in a variety of ways, including helping 2,984 people improve their English, reading to 427 children, and helping 708 people with computer questions. The annual celebration recognizes the important contributions that volunteers make to our community. Learn how you can volunteer at the Library by visiting sjpl.org/volunteer.

SJ Leaders x Libraries: SJPL is proud to bring you its new blog series titled “Leaders x Libraries” in collaboration with City of San José leaders. This exclusive blog series features elected officials sharing fun-library-related facts, including their favorite books, the role libraries played in their life, and what they love most about libraries. The first blog was published on March 4. The Library will release new profiles leading up to National Library Week, celebrated April 23-29. Free Tax Help Available at the Library: Prepare your 2022 taxes at SJPL with tax assistance from a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) representative available for individuals and families whose income is less than $60,000. Tax help is available at the Hillview Branch every Saturday through April 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. and at the Pearl Avenue Branch every Wednesday through May 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. For more information, please visit sjpl.org/TaxHelp

Senior Safari Pre-Registration at Happy Hollow: It’s Senior Safari time at Happy Hollow! Adults ages 50 and older can visit with their favorite animals throughout the day while connecting with local organizations that offer senior services. Enjoy free admission, parking, giveaways, coffee, and more. The Picnic Basket will offer a breakfast special for seniors. A pre-registration event will be held April 25-28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the entry plaza of Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. All seniors who pre-register will receive free same-day admission to Happy Hollow and free giveaways. Bring your friends and skip the line on event days by registering in advance. The 2023 Senior Safari series will take place on May 25, June 22, July 27, Aug. 24, Sept. 28, and Oct. 26 from 9 to 10 a.m. For questions, please email [email protected]
